Thank you for using Bolingo: Speak English. Your privacy is important to us. This Privacy Policy explains what information may be collected when you use the application, how it is used, and how it is handled when you use Bolingo's AI-powered features.
The app does not require users to create an account and does not directly collect personal information such as your name, email address, phone number, or home address.
Bolingo uses Firebase Anonymous Authentication to create an anonymous user identifier (Firebase UID). This identifier is used to authenticate API requests, associate requests with a user's application session, and maintain conversational context for the AI features. The anonymous identifier does not directly contain the user's name, email address, phone number, or home address.
Bolingo also processes information that users voluntarily provide when using certain features, including text messages and voice input.
Bolingo provides AI-powered language learning and translation features. When you use AI Mode, you are interacting with an artificial intelligence system, not a human. AI-generated translations and responses may occasionally be inaccurate or incomplete.
When you send a text message using the AI feature, the message is transmitted securely to Bolingo's backend servers. The backend uses OpenAI's GPT-4o-mini model to process the request and generate the requested translation or response. Bolingo does not intentionally store user messages in a database or permanent file storage. Conversation state may be retained temporarily in server memory so that the AI can maintain conversational context across subsequent requests from the same anonymous user. OpenAI's API is used as an AI service provider for processing these requests. According to OpenAI, API inputs and outputs are not used to train its models by default unless the API customer explicitly opts in to applicable data-sharing programs. OpenAI also provides data-retention controls for eligible API customers.
Data sent to OpenAI's API may be transferred to and processed in the United States. OpenAI may retain this data for up to 30 days for abuse-monitoring purposes, after which it is deleted, in accordance with OpenAI's own data retention policies.
Bolingo allows users to speak instead of typing their messages. When you use the voice-input feature, the audio captured by your device is securely transmitted to Bolingo's backend servers and processed using a speech-to-text model running on Bolingo's own server infrastructure. The voice recording is used only to perform the requested transcription and is not intentionally retained after the transcription process is completed. The resulting text may then be processed by the AI translation feature described above.
Bolingo also provides an optional text-to-speech feature. When a user chooses to listen to a translated response, the translated text is sent to Bolingo's backend and processed using the Kokoro text-to-speech model running on Bolingo's own server infrastructure. The resulting audio is streamed back to the application for playback. Bolingo does not intentionally store the generated audio as a permanent user file.

The application displays advertisements using Google AdMob. AdMob may use device identifiers and other technologies to provide and measure advertisements in accordance with Google's policies.
Learning progress and completed lessons may be stored locally on your device. This information is not uploaded to our servers unless explicitly described elsewhere in this Privacy Policy.
Bolingo does not intentionally store user voice recordings after voice transcription is completed. Bolingo does not intentionally store AI chat messages in a permanent database or file storage. Conversational state may temporarily remain in server memory to allow the AI to maintain context across subsequent requests. Anonymous authentication identifiers may remain associated with the application's authentication and service infrastructure for as long as necessary to provide the service, maintain security, or comply with applicable legal requirements.
The application is intended for users aged 13 years and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe that personal information has been provided by a child, please contact us so that appropriate action can be taken.
We take reasonable measures to protect information processed through the application. Communications between the application and Bolingo's backend services are encrypted using HTTPS/TLS. Communications between Bolingo's backend and external services such as the OpenAI API are also transmitted using encrypted connections.
Use of the AI chat and voice features is optional. Users can choose whether to use text-based AI interactions or voice input. You may stop using the application at any time by uninstalling it from your device.
This Privacy Policy may be updated from time to time. Any changes will be reflected on this page with an updated effective date.
